John Bellworthy's career in the motor trade started in the early 70's with a full apprenticeship earning several qualifications. He spent many years working in multi franchise dealerships throughout the South, gaining knowledge of many makes and models of vehicles, especially the early turbo'd cars (RS's, Saab's and Renaults to name a few).
After working his way up through the ranks, a move North was on the cards during the late 80's; once settled John set up his own business as Derby's premier mobile mechanic, where he established an excellent customer base. After 5 years he opened a workshop along with an MOT centre.
In 1995 his son Craig joined the business and after attending EMTEC to gain his qualifications he won the 'Mechanic of the Year' in 1998. This very busy garage started to notice the increase in enquiries for turbo related work, and realised there were few companies in the Midlands who were capable of such work. So, with his previous turbo knowledge, and a successful business behind him to finance his plans, John concentrated his efforts on the repair and reconditioning of turbochargers.
This took place around 1997 and this area of the business has grown ever since, so much so that John decided to sell off the garage & MOT centre to an employee at the time so he could concentrate his efforts on turbos.
From starting in the corner of a busy vehicle repair centre in a room no bigger than 3m x 3m, packed full of tools and equipment, just over a year later 'The Turbo Centre' had outgrown its premises and the search was on for a larger unit.
A small factory unit on Canal Street became home to 'The Turbo Centre' for the next two years. The business developed to include the fitting of turbo units into vehicles, so yet a third premises move to a larger unit was needed.
Clarke Street with its pair of 2-poster ramps, a third member of staff and a company name change sees 'Central Turbos' as the one stop turbo shop catering for all turbo related needs.
